Gaming giants Sony and Korean gaming company NCSoft have officially announced the development of a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMO) set in the universe of the popular Horizon series. The new title has been announced as Horizon Steel Frontiers. The game is designed to be free-to-play with cross-platform support for PC, iOS, and Android.

Horizon Steel Frontiers brings the series’ core experience of hunting giant mechanical creatures to a multiplayer environment where thousands of players can interact simultaneously.

The approximately ten-minute announcement video featured both cinematic footage and gameplay footage from the game’s pre-alpha phase. The video showed players navigating natural environments and familiar metal structures from the series while battling giant machines.

Players take on the role of a mech hunter in a vast area called the Deathlands, whose geography is inspired by Arizona and New Mexico.

It will be possible to interact with thousands of other players in this region simultaneously. Players will be able to both cooperate and hunt the machines, and clash with rival tribes over resources.

Executive Producer Sung-Gu Lee also revealed that they are working on new mechanics that will allow players to pick up weapons dropped by the machines they hunt and carry them on their mounts to use in future battles.

The announcement video also showcased the game’s character customization features. Players will now be able to create their own unique characters, replacing Aloy, the series’ main character to date.

Sony and NCSoft have not yet announced a release date for the highly anticipated Horizon Steel Frontiers. However, Executive Producer Lee stated in the video that the development team aims to release the game as soon as possible.
